Wow, it’s hot! Protect your home from excessive heat.

It’s nice and warm outside right now. When the sun is beating down, it’s a good idea to protect your home from excessive heat. Here are some ways to do that:
- Close the windows during the day when the outside air is warmer than the air inside.
- Shade the windows facing the sun with blinds or curtains to keep the sun from beating in. You can also protect the windows in rooms that heat up easily with window-mounted sun-blocking film or shade-providing plants.
- Open the windows at night as the outside air cools down. Ventilate the interior by creating a draft, if possible, or use a fan to bring fresh outside air into the room.
- A fan can make you feel more comfortable, but in excessively warm indoor air (> 35), a fan increases your body’s heat load – it also causes moisture to evaporate from your skin, so be sure to drink enough fluids.
- Use an air conditioner if necessary. Be sure to keep the doors and windows closed while it’s running. Do not leave the air conditioner on if you are not at home.
- During the hottest part of the day, turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances, as they generate heat and raise the indoor temperature.
